Following a series of problems which necessitated a complete System Restoration of my Windows 7 Home Premium PC - I
realized that I should have a copy? of the Windows 7 (just in case the Windows 7 ever crashes).
It is my understanding that you can download an ISO image of Windows 7 from 'Digital Fiver' that could be used to recreate
Windows 7 in the event of a total crash (provided you have the Microsoft Product Key of the crashed Window7). Is this
correct?
If so - please provide step by step instructions of the entire process. I have never made or used an ISO image at all - nor have I ever burnt a DVD (or anything else for that matter).
Thank you in advance for your help
Yes that is true. A site we use around here for the download is [Direct Download Links] Download Official, Original and Untouched Windows 7 with SP1 ISO (32-bit and 64-bit). Once you have downloaded the correct copy for your purpose you then simply burn the .iso file to a CD using the extremely simple to operate Image burn software.
If you need more detail I will be happy to provide it. The download is straightforward. It is a large one so be prepared for an hour or two download of 2.5 GB or so. Once downloaded then download and install Imgburn. Run ImgBurn and select Write an iso file then select your .iso file and put a DVD in the drive and click write. That's all there is to it.
Many parts of World including the US do not have high speed internet service in some regions THUS The Windows Legal ISO Image can take between 12 to 14 hours to download according to many factors so insure your computer's electrical source is stable and dependable before beginning the download.
This is for X17 Images and is updated download links I think.

If you install with this .iso, it will most likely require the driver for your CD/DVD reader. That is one of the first things it will ask for. I suggest you download that from your manufacturers website and put it on a USB stick so that you can provide it during the installation.
I think you guys just went way over the OPs head. You almost went over mine. It's a good thing I'm 6'6'.
Optical Drives do not require a driver when used with modern PCs.

I use to be 6'-0', now I'm 5'-10.5'.

Rick, I guess you have never used the .iso. Try it and then tell your story.
When I post something, I know what I am talking about because I tried it.

Could you not just use the built in recovery feature in windows 7 to create a disk;

Yes, that will work and should be done. However many folk do not know about it until too late. Some folks like to help others and a complete set of Windows 7 SP1 disks is a good set of tools in the arsenal.
That option is system repair only, not a rip of the original OS.
For that there should be an inbuilt system to create the disks. There is of course F8 function to restore to factory image in the RE partition, if the HDD fails then you are pretty well knackered!
Instead of downloading the full set you can modify the ISO to make it universal IE/ W7 Basic plus W7 Premium plus W7 ultimate all from one ISO
You have to remove the ei.cfg from the ISO

Thanks to all who have replied to my posts - however (as is often the case) they have created some additional questions.
I have Verizon Fios and my PC is under 1year old. How many hours should I allow for this project and about how many DVD+R discs will it take (I am presently using 45GB out of 921GB available)??
Do I have to worry about the DVD drivers? My PC does have an Optical Disc DVD drive.
With a 'System Image' (created with the Window 7 built in recovery tools) is it possible to boot the PC and recover the PC (to the date it was created)?? The reason for my concern is because my Vista PC was lost when its ''Windows Explorer'
encountered a fatal error' and could not be 'found' despite my trying everything (including the 'factory created restore
discs')at least twice - - - - I just do not want to be in that predicament ever again.
Thank you again for all your help.
1.Download Free ISO Burner, a completely free program that only burns ISO files, making it really easy to use.
Note: Free ISO Burner is completely free and fully functional. It works on Windows 7, Vista, and XP, and will burn an ISO image file to any of the various kinds of BD, DVD, and CD discs that exist.
If you'd prefer to choose a different ISO burner tool, see Tip #3 at the bottom of the page. Of course if you do that, the instructions below pertaining to Free ISO Burner won't exactly apply.
Double-click on the FreeISOBurner file that you just downloaded. The Free ISO Burner program will start.
Free ISO Burner is a standalone program, meaning it doesn't install, it just runs. This is yet another reason why I prefer this ISO burner over others with huge installations.
Insert a blank disc in your drive.
As long as your optical drive supports it, this disc can be a CD, DVD, or BD since Free ISO Burner supports them all.
Tip: Use the smallest sized disc as you can because a disc burned with an ISO file isn't often usable for other purposes. For example, if the ISO file you're using is only 125 MB, don't use a DVD or BD if you have a less expensive empty CD available.
See Optical Media Storage Capacity for more information on how much data certain kinds of discs can hold.
Click the Open button next to the empty space within the ISO File section, near the top of the program window.
When the Open window appears, locate and select the ISO file you wish to burn to the empty disc.
Once you've selected the ISO file, click the Open button at the bottom of the window to confirm your selection.
Now that you're back to the Free ISO Burner main screen, check that the option under Drive is in fact the optical drive you put the empty disc in while on Step 3 above.
If you have more than one optical drive, you may have more than one option to choose here.
Skip the customizations in the Options area unless you know what you're doing.
Unless you're troubleshooting a problem, you might, at most, want to configure a volume label for the new disc but you don't have to.
Click the Burn button to start the ISO file burn.
Depending on how large the ISO file is, and how fast your disc burner is, the ISO burning process could take anywhere from several seconds, to several minutes, to complete.
When the burning is complete, the disc will automatically eject from the drive. You then can remove the disc and close Free ISO Burner.
Now you can use the ISO-file-turned-disc for whatever you needed it for.
@whs,
I am using the the Legal SP1 'Digital Fiver' Download as I write.
Appears we live in separate computer worlds so I won't 'Bird Dog' your advice to others
IF you don't 'Bird Dog' my advice to others.
That would be fair I should think as we use different computer hardware in different configurations.
Rick P.
Fair. But when I used it, first thing that came up was a request for a CD/DVD driver. And that was on a 3 month old Toshiba laptop. So I thought it would be wise to mention that. But maybe on other systems it will behave differently. That's why I said:' it will most likely require the driver for your CD/DVD reader '. Figuring that if it does that on a brand new PC, it may do it on others too.
If one needs a driver for the CD/DVD drive and one gets it from a file on a flash drive, where does one get the driver for the USB port that the flash drive is in.
Thank you for all the help - a special thank you to MrBb 11000 for his explicit instructions, I've downloaded the Free ISO
Burner - and - I am in the process of downloading the ISO of Windows 7.
I have one more question - I am doing this just to keep on hand in case something major happens to my new PC. At what
point do I enter the Microsoft Product Key??? Do I wait to enter it until - if (hopefully never) I need to revive my PC??? (I understand the ISO version of Windows 7 is only valid for about 30 dayswithout entering the Product Key).
I realize that's probably a dumb question - but - this is the 1st time I have ever done this.
Thank you for your patience and help.
You can enter it any time you want, within the 30 days.
Once again many thanks to you for all of your help. You are the best!!!
